Escorting should really be a last resort I think. Could you put up with supermarket work or call centre work? That can be fitted round university education. Or there's always bar work and takeaways and restaurants. Yes, they'll be the menial jobs but at least you know you should get home safely and it won't impact on future plans.
If you are in severe financial crisis, speak to your Union welfare officer or any other advice department that your uni has. You could also look into getting some careers advice either from your uni or from Connexions ( http://www.connexions-direct.com ), who may be able to help you find a job.

It doesn't have to be taking experimental meds if you're not comfortable with that-- I worked in a sleep lab where we kept ppl awake for a very long time, and they got paid very well. You could also ask your uni's Psych department, they often have shorter studies for petty cash.
